Hearts for a Safe Harbor, held their first Safe Harbor Night on Friday November 4, 2005 with Archbishop John Baptist Odama from Gulu, Uganda as special guest. The evening included a hunger banquet, a reenactment of the plight of the night commuters by local youth, and a talk led by the archbishop. funding raised on that evening helped to begin the construction of Safe Harbor House in Gulu. Pictures from the event are available in our Photo Gallery under "See". To be in solitary with the youth of northern Uganda, any group can host their own Safe Harbor Night. A night of solidarity, the evening is meant to be one of awareness and empathy building for the vulnerable children affected by the on-going 19 year old war led by The Lord's Resistance Army. To avoid captivity at a young age, every evening, thousands of children walk 3-10 kilometers into Gulu and sleep in large groups anywhere shelter can be found. Most children come hungry and without parents. Many groups have 2 adult leaders that lead them in nightly prayer. Under trees, on verandas and in abandoned buildings, these children pray out loud before sleeping in the raw elements. Using the resources available on this site or by contacting Hearts for a Safe Harbor, groups can plan an evening that may include a hunger banquet reenactment of the the night commuters, a hunger banquet, a prayer service or vigil, poetry readings a Safe Harbor walk or an overnight event. These are just some ideas that any group can conduct. Donations can be taken at the door of the event or participants can elicit sponsors. University, school, church and civic organizations are some of many groups that can host a Safe Harbor Night. Ninety percent of the proceeds go toward the building of Safe Harbor House in Gulu, Uganda. The balance of the proceeds goes to the operational funding needs of Hearts for a Safe Harbor. Hearts for a Safe Harbor is incorporated in the State of Ohio as a charitable Non-profit organization and is a 501 (C) (3) corporation. Donations are tax deductible, and can be mailed to: Hearts for a Safe Harbor |
