Help

Hearts for a Safe Harbor is a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) charitable organization that strives to help vulnerable youth worldwide.

Hearts for a Safe Harbor began after it's Founder, Julie Maruskin, read a small article in a local newspaper in early November 2003. Based on a United Nations report that 15 countries used children for armed conflict, Julie was shocked and grieved to learn that children as young as 8 years old were being abducted from their homes and forced to become soldiers

With this knowledge, a small group of people became dedicated to helping vulnerable youth wherever they may be.

The journey has led them to northern Uganda where a 20 year rebel war, led by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), has caused 1,500,000 people to be displaced and 25,000 children to be abducted.

Every evening up to 50,000 children called night commuters leave their rural homes in order to avoid abduction by the rebels. They walk without any adult supervision, 3 to 10 kilometers into Gulu, Kitgum, and Pader, to sleep in relative safety on the streets, alleyways and corridors of the city. Each morning they return to their homes in the bush to attend school.

Help Support the Children of Uganda

In July 2005, Julie and Jerry Maruskin traveled to Uganda to meet with the people and the vulnerable youth of Gulu, to better understand their needs and to learn how to help. The board and members of Hearts for a Safe Harbor have made as their first goal, the building of Safe Harbor House, in order to help the youth of Gulu, Uganda
